Different glass has different usage and capabilities.
When we talk about laminated glass, there’s a set of questions that comes along with it– what is laminated glass?
Let us break it all to you.
Laminated glass is like a sandwich made of glass layers. It's created by bonding two or more sheets of glass together. These layers can be made from different types of glass, such as tempered (toughened), heat-strengthened, or regular annealed glass.Between the glass sheets, there's usually an interlayer, often made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), a clear material that offers great optical clarity. At LamiFlex Glass, we provide a wide range of laminated glass products, including acoustic glass and decorative options with fabric or mesh interlayers.
Tempered, or safety glass laminate, is used in places where safety and security are crucial. It's commonly found in residential and commercial skylights, glass balustrades, car windshields, and security doors. It's also a popular choice for shop windows, as it makes break-ins much harder for potential thieves. On the other hand, architects favor annealed laminated glass because it enhances safety and security without the optical distortion often seen in toughened glass.
We supply laminated glass sheets in thicknesses ranging from 1/2'' to 3''. The exact thicknesses available depend on the types of glass and interlayers used.
A major benefit of laminated glass is that it doesn’t shatter. Even if it breaks, the glass layers stay attached to the EVA interlayer, making it much safer than annealed glass, which tends to break into large, sharp fragments. Laminated glass is also sturdier than annealed glass and provides better UV protection.
Laminated glass sheets can be cut, as long as the glass isn’t toughened (tempered). However, it’s a complex task that requires specialized tools. Tempered laminated glass, on the other hand, cannot be cut. Disturbing its structure will cause it to shatter immediately. Our recommendation: leave it to the experts. At LamiFlex Glass, we provide custom-cut laminated glass, tailored to your exact specifications using advanced machinery.
Due to its highly customizable features, laminated glass costs can vary in so many ways. Regular laminated glass can cost between $40 to $120 per square foot. If you’re looking to customize it for better functionality, take into consideration certain factors like glass thickness, color, number of layers, and other added features. Installation procedures can also add up to the overall costs as it will need professional help.
